- It was introduced on 3 July 1967 to promote South African gold ownership internationally.
- Only the 1 oz version existed at launch — fractional Krugerrands (½ oz, ¼ oz, etc.) came much later.
- The coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) of pure gold, but weighs 33.93 g total because it is 22-carat gold (91.67% Au + copper alloy) for durability.
- The 1967 issue is considered special by collectors because it is the first-year issue, and early proofs had a different appearance from later proof Krugerrands.
