- 130 coins with the 1898 dies were minted in 1899 with the  ’99’ over-print below Kruger’s bust.
- This coin is not one of the over-prints yet it is still very scarce.
- 137,000 was the normal output per year for one-pound coins, but
- the mint was closed on 1 January 1898 and opened again on the 1st of October 1899 to fund the Anglo-Boer war.
- The British’s interception of the 99 dies, causing these emergency measures.
- Nobody knows how many 1899 coins were minted with 1898 dies,
