Johannes Paulus Kruger (1825-1904) was a prominent Boer leader against British rule and president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republik (1883-1902) which later became the Transvaal Colony under British rule and then the Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa.

KM#10.1, Hern#Z44 (1892) double shaft on wagon tongue;
KM#10.2, Hern#Z45-53 (1893-1900) single shaft on wagon tongue.

The 1892 double shaft 1 Pond was stuck by the Prussian Mint in Berlin. All subsequent mintages were struck on ‘Oom Paul’ at the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek National Mint in Pretoria.
